About
the program
Growing children need the nutrients food provides for their
survival, not to
mention the development of healthy bones
and muscles. To help them achieve
this, adults must exercise
their responsibility to foster healthy eating patterns
in children,
both at home and in educational settings where food is
provided
or supervised.
Babies, toddlers and children of school age are reliant on adults for the provision of healthy food. The Rainbow Food program is designed to help adults fulfill their responsibility guilt free, inspired and informed, so that children can enjoy building the foundations for good health: physical, mental and emotional, while enjoying a positive experience of food. Suitable for families, parents, individual children, preschools, schools and child care.
At preschool ages, children’s senses are powerful and are their greatest learning tools. Learning about food for them is experiential, involving taste, smell, touch, observation, action and repetition. They learn through participation, not theory.
Sensitive to their surroundings, children respond negatively to environments that are unfriendly, rushed, impatient or hostile. Kitchens and eating events that are not loving and friendly are not conducive to food appreciation. Adults, resentful of preparing food or in a hurry to do so, will not create a happy atmosphere conducive to enjoyable eating. Children sometimes refuse food because of the discomfort they feel at the eating event, some gobble the food up quickly so they can run away from the situation. Others suffer silently, feeling powerless over their environment.
The Rainbow Food program is designed to make food preparation, presentation and delivery more fun, so that children’s experience of healthy food can be guilt free, memorable and enjoyable. Involving children in the process of preparing food teaches them about food and empowers them to operate independently, under supervision of course.
